A sergeant and bandsman of the 2nd Battalion, the King's Own Scottish Borderers. The seated sergeant wears the crossed rifle and crown badge of best shot in his company. The bandsman has one good conduct stripe on his left cuff.

The 2nd battalion was in India from c. 1890 to c. 1904 and took part in the Chitral Expedition (1895) and the Tirah Campaign (1897). Being that neither man in wearing the India General Service Medal, and both are wearing home service dress with no concession to the local Indian climate leads me to postulate that the photo was taken not long after the battalion's arrival in India c. 1890.
