Devonshire Natal.png

Cabinet Photograph
Imperial Studio/J Dickinson - Photographer
6 Longmarket Street, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa
c. 1902

This image of a veteran lance corporal is being identified as being a member of the Devonshire Regiment. This is based on the appearance of the man's collar badges - a star device
with a crown above though lack of detail prevents 100% certainty.  The man's well-tailored appearance and the presence of the ribbon for the Queen's South Africa Medal would seem
to indicate that the photograph was taken after the end of the Anglo-Boer War. He wears a single good conduct stripe on his lower left cuff and a watch chain with two fobs on his breast.
Both battalions of the Devons served in South Africa during the war and it is impossible to tell which he was a member of. The fact that both battalions served in Natal does not help
matters either.
