A special thank you to Bruce Bassett Powell for identifying the subject of this cabinet photograph as a major in the Gold Coast Haussas.

This colonial regiment was first raised around 1870 by Sir John Glover.  About 1000 strong, the Haussas took part in the Ashanti Expeditions and provided a detachment for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.

This officer's ornate uniform was overall black with its abundant braiding picked out in scarlet or possibly cherry red.
