The maple leaf badge on this man's "Montana Peak" or "lemon squeezer" hat clearly identifies him as one of Canada's soldiers who served the Empire during the Boer War.
He wears the ribbons for both the Queen's and King's South Africa Medals. His uniform appears to be that of the South African Constabulary. This is also borne out by the "AC" visible on his right shoulder.
