His "Boss of the Plain" hat and tight fitting ropers gloves give a hint towards this man's outdoor and probably cattle oriented trade. Part of his outfit not popularly connected with the
Old West is the knit cardigan style sweater he chose to wear for his portrait. Perhaps the most famous depiction in period photographs of such a sweater is in the famous tintype of
William "Billy the Kid" Bonney" now in the Koch Collection. While not common in period photos, knit sweaters such as this must have had a fair amount of popularity at the time.
Certainly this man thought it fashionable enough to have specifically chosen to be photographed wearing it.
