|This cabinet photograph was inscribed by the sitter: "Bloemfontein South Africa 7-6-00. Sarah, with best love from
Tom." Tom was outfitted for mounted could have been a member of a mounted infantry or cavalry unit. His rank seems
to have been that of saddler corporal. Although he seems to have taken care to look smart for the photograph his
uniform looks to have seen its fair share of field service with his riding breeches being of a heavy wool fabric and his
tunic a lighter weight cotton khaki. His foreign service helmet is protected by a khaki cover the use of which was almost
universal during the Anglo-Boer War.
