This letter carrier of the Royal Mail (No. E343) chose to wear the hallmark of his former uniformed service during the Anglo-Boer War - his Queen's South Africa Medal with four clasps. The Royal Mail was one a number of royal uniformed services - other than the military- that many former soldiers tended to gravitate to for employment in civilian life. His hat bears the intertwined "GPO" cypher for the General Post Office. Carte de Visite Denning - Photographer 9 Colebrook Road, Walthamstow, East London, England c. 1900s |
