A veteran troop sergeant major of the Royal Engineers. His turban may indicate that he was attached to an Anglo-Indian Army unit when this photograph was taken, possibly the
Bombay Sappers and Miners
. He wears the ribbon of the India General Service Medal and second which is indistinct. His sword does not appear to be of a regulation British NCO
pattern which again could hint to him having been seconded to an Indian unit. The setting and backdrop are outstanding, almost theatrical and a seeming hallmark of this photographer.
