Shriniwas Mahadeo & Son - Photographer
Church Road, Begaum, India
This photograph was taken around 1887 while the 2 Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry was stationed at Belgaum, India.
The pictured Private wears the 1854 India General Service Medal with a single clasp that probably bore the honour "Burma -
1885-87". Unusually the ribbon is clear enough in this small photograph to easily determine the medal as being the India
General Service Medal and not another similar medal such as the 1877-79 South Africa Medal which members of the 1st
Battalion of the Somsersets was entitled too for their service in the Ninth Cape Frontier War (1878) and the Anglo-Zulu War
(1879). The 1st Battalion also served in India beginning in 1891.
