Identified on the reverse side of the photograph as John Henry (Jack) Wagers, what little is known about this soldier comes from what can be deduced from his two photographs since no
service records for him have been found. He was a lance corporal when the above photograph was taken and he appears to have been a member of the 1st Battalion/the Dorsetshire
Regiment which was posted to Ferozpore, India beginning about 1902. His battalion took part in the Tirah Campaign (1897) and as he is not wearing the 1895 India General Service
Medal with the clasps "Punjab Frontier 1897-98" and "Tirah 1897-98" (nor does he appear in the associated medal roll) he must have joined the battalion after c. 1897-98.
