Even though bearing a bold dedication and signature of its reverse side this officer remains unidentified due to the hard to read nature of his hand writing. It may read "Yours sincerely J. Griffiths" (shown below) but that is no more than a guess on my part. His rank appears to be that of Major and his button seem to be of the old style numbered regimental style but are nor readable either. I date the image to c. 1886 because the photographer used this specific back mark during that time period.
