B. R. Leech - Photographer
30 Roe Street
Macclesfield, Cheshire, England
Identified on the reverse side: "A. Matthews, 1896, My Granddad, Ches. Volunteers.", no information has been found regarding this volunteer
rifleman. The image may have been taken sometime before inscribed date since the photographer had apparently ceased operations by 1896.
Matthews uniform is gray, a color which had been widely adopted by the rifle volunteers after their establishment in the 1850s. His home service
helmet is likewise covered in rifle gray cloth. He is armed with a Martini-Henry rifle complete with brass muzzle protector.
