The cooks and mess sergeant of the 1st Battalion, the Durham Light Infantry. The old saying that an army marches on it's stomach has always held true and we can probably rightly
assume that these men were either loved or hated by the rest of the battalion. It is also interesting to note that even if 14 years had past since the regiments of the Queen's army had
lost their beloved numbers during the reforms of 1881 these men still commemorate their regiment's old designation of the 68th Foot.
