A sergeant (here posed with his wife) of a volunteer battalion of the 49th (Hertfordshire, Princess Charlotte of Wales) Regiment of Foot. The Austrian knot cuff braid indicates his
volunteer status and the large "Dragon of China" collar badges were emblematic of the 49th Foot's service during the First China War (First Opium War) between 1841 and 1843.
