A corporal of the 17th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Lancers pictured with another young man who by all appearances must be his brother. The image probably dates from around 1902 when the regiment was stationed in Edinburgh after returning from service in South Africa. The lancer may be a veteran of the Anglo-Boer War and although he does not wear the associated medals it may be that this photograph was taken prior to their issue. The 17th's medal roll for the Queen's South Africa Medal was complied at Magersfontein, Cape Colony on 16 December 1901 and that for the King's South Africa Medal at Edinburgh on 5 April 1903.
