This photograph was supplied by Mr. John House and depicts his great grandfather, No. 4430 Bombardier John Lowe of the Royal Horse Artillery. John Lowe enlisted in the Royal Horse Artillery on 20th July 1868 at the age of 19 years. He served with E Battery RHA as part of the Kandahar Field Force and was taken prisoner by Afghan forces on 27 July 1880 at the Battle of Maiwand in Afghanistan during the 2nd Anglo-Afghan War. Lowe was one of fourteen British soldiers captured by Afghan forces during and after the battle. All fourteen were subsequently executed by their captors.
