|1/6th Plate Tintype (Ferrotype)
Wearing a fur cap, an 1880s pattern tunic, and what may tartan trews, this rather grim-looking Canadian militiaman may have been a member of a militia battalion with Scottish
affiliations, possibly a light infantry unit. The photographic plate is completely unmarked as is usually the case with tintypes so narrowing down its precise origins is almost impossible.
Based on the pattern of his man's tunic, the photograph postdates the Fenian Raids by several years but this man may well have seen service during the 1885 North-West Rebellion.
The man's tunic is without collar badges as was typical of Canadian militia battalions at the time.
