Based upon several details in this image I believe it depicts a Canadian militiaman from soemtime in the late 1860s or early 1870s. His belt buckle appears to be of a very plain general service variation with a crown in the center but without the usually seen motto regular British belt plates. His cuff braid appears to date to the early 1870 period. The fact that no badges of any sort are to be seen on his tunic lends to him being a member of the militia as opposed to a member of a British battalion stationed in Canada during the same time period. 1/6 Plate Tintype or Ferrotype Unknown Photographer Canada c. 1870 |
