This young family appears to be stereotypical of the people who began to populate the West with the advance of civilization and the eventual closing of the frontier. Even at this late
date Butte, Montana had reputation of a rough around the edges mining boom town where copper was king. The city was also noted for being the home of one of the West's most blatant
and notorious red light districts.

This couple and their infant child at first appearances look to be of the middle class - the husband/father may have been employed as a shop keeper in town or perhaps in the
administrative end of one of the local mining concerns. One small detail in the photo is worth noting with that being the missing button on the man's coat.
