This sergeant of the 1st Caithness Artillery Volunteers shows that not all volunteers were simply part time soldiers. This man wears the Crimean
War Medal, the Turkish Crimean War Medal, the Indian Mutiny Medal and what may be a Long Service & Good Conduct Medal. He had seen a
good deal of active service overseas before returning to Scotland and continuing his service to the Crown as a volunteer artilleryman.

His home service pattern helmet is partially visible to the left in the photo. This dates the photograph to sometime after the 1878 adoption of the
