Identified by the drum badge on his right sleeve as a drummer, the soldier in khaki service dress posed for the photographer at what may have been his family home somewhere in
Britain. His regiment is uncertain - the regimental titles on his shoulder straps cannot be made out while his collar badges appear consist of a rose inset into a star although this is also
open to further interpretation. He seems to have the ribbon for the India General Service Medal on his tunic.

What helps set this photograph apart is its outdoor garden setting. The elaborate and deliberately casual planting to his right. A tall spiny cactus grows amidst spiderwort in the large
urn-shaped planter while a fern grows at its base. Additionally a moors head sculpture decorates the scene at far left.
