Identified on the photograph's reverse side as "Robert Hart - Iowa" this cabinet photograph depicts a Private of "E" Troop,
1st United States Cavalry. I can find only one reference in the
U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments that seems to apply to this
soldier and that for is a Robert F. Hart who enlisted in "E" Troop, 1st Cavalry at Des Moines, Iowa on 1 September, 1896. If
this is the man pictured then he had a relatively short military career since the
Reigister stated that he deserted on 11 April,
1897. No mention is made at to Hart being apprehended or returning to duty. Robert F. Hart was described as being a 24 year
old framer from Peoria, Illinois who stood less and an inch under six feet tall. This was rather unusual since men of shorter
stature were usually assigned to cavalry units. I have found references to a Robert Franklin Hart of Peoria, Illinois who was
the same age but cannot be sure if they are the same man.
