This is one of those oddly sized carte of cabinet style photographs which seem to have been particular of the German market in the late 1800 and early 1900s. Based upon information
found at the very informative
German Colonial Uniforms website I believe this German Colonial official für Deutsch-Südwestafrika to have held the commission of Paymaster. The
uniform would have been gray overall with blue cuffs and collar piped in white.I believe that colonial official such as Paymasters where not part of the Schutztruppe military
organization but served along side the colonial troops fulfilling various administrative posts such as that of Paymaster, doctors and veterinarians.
