This cabinet photograph was purchased quite some time ago but not posted until now due to the difficulty in identifying the sitting officer who left a ranter cryptic inscription on the
lower portion of the image. It appears to read: "Yours very sincerely "Cap" Garrey" 1899. The his apparent surname of Garrey has not been found in the Army List for 1899 or
several proceeding issues nor has anything been found in the way of similar variations. Unfortunately the regimental title on his shoulder strap while visible is unreadable. The
apparent nickname of "Cap" may indicate that the sitter held the rank of captain when he inscribed it in 1899 and that the photograph was taken sometime erlier when he was still a
lieutenant.
